Apple is changing the way we use Mac with one feature at a time. Apple believe People have been doing the same things on computers for years. Clicking. Scrolling. Installing. Saving. With OS X Lion, they’ve challenged the accepted way of doing things by introducing new features that will change the way we use a computer.

With the release of Mac OS X 10.7 Lion this summer, Apple will make the switch to a new kind of digital distribution for its operating system upgrades by releasing the software first through its new Mac App Store.

Apple revealed its distribution plans for Lion at this year’s Worldwide Developers Conference in San Francisco, California. Steve Jobs showcased the “future” of the Mac operating system during the conference.

Beta version of the Operating System is downloaded from the Mac App Store by entering a redemption code provided by Apple. Utilizing the App Store will allow owners of the new disc-drive-less MacBook Air to easily install the latest version of Mac OS X without the need for a physical disc.

Some of the cool features are:

Mission Control: a powerful, entirely new feature that unifies Exposé, Dashboard, Spaces, and full screen apps to give you a bird’s eye view of every app and window running on your Mac. With a simple swipe, your desktop zooms out to display your open windows grouped by app, thumbnails of your full screen apps as well as your Dashboard, and allows you to instantly navigate anywhere with a click.

Launchpad: makes it easier than ever to find and launch any app. With a single click, Launchpad displays all your Mac apps in a stunning full screen layout where you can launch, re-order or organize apps into folders. You can also arrange apps into multiple pages and swipe between them.

Full screen apps: Lion brings the full screen experience that iPad users love to the Mac. With one click, your application window goes full screen, taking advantage of your Mac’s brilliant display. You can swipe from one full screen window to another and even back to your Desktop or Dashboard.

New Multi-Touch gestures: New Multi-Touch gestures and fluid animations give you a natural and intuitive way to interact with your Mac. New gestures include pinching your fingers to zoom in on a web page or image, swiping left or right to turn a page or switch between full screen apps and swiping up to enter Mission Control.

MMUBS was selected for WordCamp UK 2010 following a bidding process, at which a number of potential venues were considered.

Tony Scott, WordCamp UK Organising Coordinator, said: “From the options available, MMUBS was the clear winner following the bidding process.”

“The modern conference facilities offered, the flexibility shown by the MMUBS team in making detailed arrangements, along with availability of competitively priced campus accommodation, were the clinching factors.”

“We’re looking forward to a productive, educational and enjoyable weekend in Manchester”.

In 2008 WordCamp UK attracted 120 attendees, in 2009 that grew to 150, and this year they are aiming to attract 200, reflecting the increased level of interest in WordPress over the past year.

The weekend covers all the sectors that use WordPress: from individual bloggers to large companies.

David Edmundson-Bird, Director of Executive Programmes at MMUBS said, “We are proud to support WordCamp UK 2010 as a Gold sponsor. With WordPress’s soaring popularity and our specialism in digital marketing and publishing we look forward to collaborating with WordCamp’s delegates, from web publishers to designers and developers.”

Chi-chi Ekweozor, founder of Manchester-based Internet TV and social media consultancy, Real Fresh TV, who proposed and wrote the winning city bid for WordCamp UK 2010 added: “I attended my first WordCamp UK in 2009 and was blown away by the friendliness of UK WordPress community.”

“By the end of the conference, I had met Matt Mullenweg and Mike Little, cofounders of WordPress and a senior member of Google’s Search Quality team in Ireland! The quality of speakers at WordCamp UK events illustrate how much admiration and respect there is for WordPress in the online publishing sector.”

WordCamp will be held on the weekend of 17-18 July 2010, with tickets available from April, more details: http://uk.wordcamp.org/
